The historic place where World War II began. On 1 September 1939 at 04:45  the battleship Schleswig-Holstein without warning opened fire on the Polish garrison. The seven-day heroic defense began. The Germans attacked from sea, land and air. After seven days of heroic fighting, the Poles surrendered. As a sign of honour the German commander allowed Major Sucharski to keep his sword while being taken prisoner.
